The Legend of Hoolio!

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away.... there lived a slightly demented Emu named Hoolio. Hoolio Egglaysius.

Okay he wasn't really from another Galaxy, but that was a better opening than 'it was a dark and stormy night'...:)

Hoolio, our rather demented emu friend is the official Bravenet Web Journal of the Week mascot, as voted for by our regular Journal of the Week visitors...

...and this is his story.

Hoolio actually started life as my Avatar at a gaming site I used to frequent a few years ago. Of course, he wasn't Hoolio back then, just a cute image of an 'ostrich' I found while surfing about one day.

When I decided to put up the Journal of the Week site, I wanted to add a touch of casualness to the site, and so I emailed myself the image you see above, from home and added it to my Journal's title header, and there he stayed carefully watching over the comings and goings of Journal visitors.

During this time, I developed some problems with my eyes and wound up going to the Eye Doctor... I found out I would need to wear glasses while I was at work. After some delays (requiring me to take some vacation time) I finally got my glasses and logged in only to find that journal regular Wil had decided that since "I" would have to be wearing glasses, that it was only fair that my site mascot should also be toting the spectacles around... and a star was born!

This is the now famous (or perhaps infamous) photo that appeared in Wil's Blog on that fateful spring day. I laughed so hard when I saw it I thought I was going to keel over dead...

Fortunately common sense prevailed, and rather than be dead, I decided to ask the JotW visitors which photo I should use in my header, so I put up a Bravenet Mini Poll and requested that Visitors should cast their vote:

And after several days of furious voting and campaigning, this was the result:

Clearly, our very wise Journal community members thought the Glasses were just the ticket for an up and coming website Mascot and so it came to pass that our little Mascot friend was forevermore destined to go through life peeking through his rose tinted lenses.

Several visitors left some very funny suggestions for different types of glasses and, once more, Wil went the extra mile and whipped up some accompanying images:

My faves from this list are the 'Dame Edna' glasses (middle, bottom row) and the 'Contact lenses'...*laugh*... (bottom-right)...

Eventually, the idea occured to me that our little friend should have his/her own name... I got lots of name suggestions but couldnt decide on just one name... so once more I put it in the Journal members hands, and here is how the vote came down:

Hoolio was voted as the new name by the narrowest of margins! Because of the closeness of the vote, I decided that our little mascot friend would henceforth be known as Hoolio Oliver Ostrich. Unfortunately, a very observant person pointed out that Hoolio isnt an Ostrich at all... he is, in fact, an Emu! So, Hoolio officially became 'Hoolio Oliver Egglaysius'...

And that... is the Legend of Hoolio... but wait, we aren't quite done yet... every Legend must have a Theme song, and the Legend of Hoolio Egglaysius is no exception. Wiithout further ado, we are proud to bring you Hoolios Theme song:

Hoo-Hoo-Hoolio - The Soundtrack
- Lyrics by William Henderson

I'm a bird that's been on everyones mind
All the time, Hoo Hoo Hoolio oh oh
Once I didn’t have a name
But people liked me just the same
Hoo Hoo Hoolio oh oh

When Bethzilla named me, I was there
Just after Wil gave me hair
Now all I need is a wife
Someone to say my name!
Hoolio, just say my name!
Oh Hoolio

Now I know that I'm too young
My life has just begun
Hoo Hoo Hoolio oh oh
Ooh give me a woman, give me a wife
Someone to share my life
Hoo Hoo Hoolio oh oh

Ah, I've just got to have her, have her now
Saw a pic of a “biker chic” and I said “WOW”!
Tho she makes me nervous, she makes me scared
But it would feel so good to hear her say my name!
Hoo Hoo Hoolio just my name!
Oh Hoolio, oh

Yes all I need is a wife
Some long legged beast to share my life
Hoolio – Thank you for my name!
Oh Hoolio I just say the name
Oh Hoolio Thank you for my name!
Hoo Hoo Hoolio oh oh oh
Now I have a name!

This is a copy of the origional page Steve created... see here for origional...i was just going to link to the origional but with Steve being gone i don't know how much longer his journal will stay, not sure if it was his own journal or one created through Bravenet, so rather than risk loosing this all together, should Steves journal disapear, i decided to make a copy of it, the only problem is the music doesn't work here but if ya want to hear the music just visit the origional page while you can. ~Jan

In tribute to Steves humourus whit and neverending knowledge of the Bravenet world as well as Jans wonderful hard work and keeping the ship afloat after Steve, I have gone in and fixed the music problem on this page so that we all can enjoy Hoolios legend RIGHTEOUSLY!!! ~AmandaMagick
